It was broadcast on 25 December 1964 as Pakistan Television in former East Pakistan.
After independence in 1971, it was renamed Bangladesh Television.
Color transmission began in 1980. Around 2 million televisions receive broadcasts from the network’s 17 relay stations.
BTV has a national channel broadcast from Dhaka. This transmission will be routed through local relay stations in major cities throughout the country. There is also a regional station in Chittagong, which broadcasts local programs in the evening. In the mid-nineties, the national TV station began broadcasting BBC and CNN news broadcasts. In 2004,
BTV launched worldwide broadcasts via its satellite-based subsidiary BTV World.
